Use of Internet Protocol (IP) is becoming pervasive within wireless networks. All 3G networks (CDMA2000 1x, 1xEV-DO, GRPS/EDGE, UMTS) support some form of IP-based packet access, while the new 4G systems (LTE, mobile WiMAX) have been explicitly designed for “all IP” operation. This course provides an introduction to IP concepts, and reviews the implications of using IP in a mobile wireless network. Solutions for IP mobility are discussed, with a specific emphasis on 1x and 1xEV-DO networks. Detailed walk-throughs are provided, showing how packet data sessions are established and maintained as the mobile device moves. IP security mechanisms in 1x and 1xEV-DO networks are reviewed, as well as a number of IP-related service enhancements.
Learning Objectives
After completing this course, the student will be able to: • Describe the key characteristics and capabilities of Internet Protocol (IP) • Discuss the benefits and challenges of the two key IP mobility solutions: Simple IP (SIP) and Mobile IP (MIP) • Illustrate how IP mobility is managed in a 1x/1xEV-DO network • Sketch the Mobile IP network architecture of 1x/1xEV-DO • Step through the Mobile IP based data calls in 1x/1xEV-DO • Describe the authentication and security related to Mobile IP • Review special features and resource management capabilities supported by Mobile IP • Understand the differences associated with IPv6
Intended Audience
This course is intended for a technical audience, primarily those in network planning and design, product development, integration and testing, and deployment functions.
